In 1990, Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, then the chief art conservator at Houston's Menil Collection, was working on the Rothko Chapel when she asked herself a question: why wait until artists die to discover clues as to how to best preserve their pieces, when you can talk to them in their lifetime?
Sites for sample collection were worked out among a smaller core group involving two of the authors (J.K.W. and S.F). and six community investigators.
