Both the observation that vagal motor unit collaterals project to myenteric ganglia and the fact that individual motor units co-innervate longitudinal and circular muscle layers are consistent with the hypothesis that elements contributing to peristaltic programming inhere, or are "hardwired," in the peripheral architecture of esophageal motor units.
Only few axon collaterals project into adjacent columns.
A few collaterals projecting to layer 6A and the white matter are also present.
Their contralateral arborizations are especially concentrated in the posterior neuropil portion, but some collaterals projecting into the anterior neuropil portion can be also observed (e.g. Fig. 6b').
In addition, we observed CR cells with individual long-range axonal collaterals projecting along the hippocampal fissure (Figs 5 A, 7 A, 8 C1) into various subregions of the hippocampal formation (Figs 5 A, 8 C1- C3).
As a whole, axonal projections of pyramidal neurons in lower LII/III were more restricted to their respective home column than those of the upper LII/III, although some horizontal or oblique collaterals projected to the neighboring septa or barrel columns (Fig. 9c, see also Fig. 4b).
