In the second general practice recruitment phase of the study, all men and women aged 35-69 on the lists of collaborating general practices in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Greater Manchester were contacted and asked to participate.
These networks consist of more than 200 collaborating general practices.

Women were enrolled in the study between March 2003 and January 2006 if they were ≥ 18 years of age, residing in a house built before 1978 (a criterion relating to a goal of the larger HOME Study examining lead exposures), intending to continue prenatal care and deliver at any of the collaborating obstetric practices and hospitals, and HIV negative.
Women scored higher in 12 of 16 key skills -- not just developing others, building relationships, collaborating, and practicing self development, but also taking initiative, driving for results and solving problems and analyzing issues.
