Reports of restriction of freedom and compulsion to receive treatment by participants who had been detained confirm this association between compulsory admission and experience of coercion reported by other authors [ 54, 55].
"There were indications that application of power of command, expert knowledge, and position were employed in a manner to suggest possible coercion," the report concluded.
"Multiple guards say this deviant hazing has created a climate of fear and coercion," the report said, "with those who declined to participate often ridiculed, humiliated, demoted or even fired".
Both men and women reported use of physical violence against their partner, men to a higher extent than women, while sexual coercion was reported mainly by men (5%).
Perceived coercion was reported by both compulsorily and voluntarily admitted patients.

However, regarding experience of sexual coercion, the reported prevalence was very similar between the sexes: 33.1% for females and 29.9% for males.
Interestingly, various studies from SSA with different types of respondents (e.g. outpatients presenting to prenatal and paediatric clinics), mostly about physical assault/sexual coercion, have reported that women may also initiate and abuse their male partners [ 10, 12- 15, 26, 28].
