ECMO systems: centrifugal pump and polymethylpentene membrane oxygenation with Bioline® coated circuits and cannulas.
It has been suggested that coated circuits improve postoperative outcomes compared with the traditional uncoated ones [ 1].
The ECMO system consisted of a Quadrox-D hollow-fiber oxygenator with BIOLINE coating, a Rotaflow centrifugal pump (Maquet, Rastatt, Germany) with heparin-coated circuit tubing, a Sechrist oxygen/air blender and a water heater/cooler (Sarns/3M Healthcare, Ann Arbor, MI, USA).
A third interpretation can be applied to the cases where a heparin-coated circuit was used.
Alternative, rescue ventilatory strategies for severe TBI/ARDS patients include prone positioning [ 5], high-frequency percussive ventilation (HFPV) [ 5], CMV-TGI [ 32], pumpless extracorporeal lung assist (pECLA) with a heparin-coated circuit [ 5, 33], and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) [ 34].
Interventions: Of patients, 30 were treated with heparin-coated circuits and reduced systemic heparinization; 30, with heparin-coated circuits and full systemic heparinization; 30, with conventional circuits and full systemic heparinization.
Measurements and Main Results: Heparin-coated circuits with full systemic heparinization did not exert any effect on coagulation parameters.
Objective: To assess the effect of heparin-coated circuits on bleeding, transfusion, and platelet count in patients undergoing primary coronary artery bypass grafting with full heparinization.
Neither heparin-coated circuits nor leukocyte filters were used.
Data on circuit coagulation are scarce, but its incidence is probably about 15 to 20% and seems to decrease notably with heparin-coated circuits.
ECMO care was delivered using Rotaflow pumps and Quadrox or PLS membranes with simplified Bioline-coated circuits (Maquet, Rastatt, Germany) without connectors, bridges or venous saturation monitoring.
