The energy industry is already under investigation for potential profiteering by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
THE Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced that it will launch an investigation into the market for current accounts.
The merger has been under investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) since April amid concerns it would substantially reduce competition in the market.
In 2006, after the market crashed in the second quarter, the CMA allowed foreign residents to invest, and last year the market was opened up to citizens of the Gulf Co-operation Council, and the CMA started issuing licences to investment banks to set up brokerage, asset management and advisory affiliates.
Alex Chisholm, chief executive of the CMA, said: "Competitive personal and SME banking markets are essential to households and businesses throughout the country, and to the success of the UK economy.
But few expect the industry to be successful in seeing off a full-blown investigation after the CMA found that customer satisfaction levels for the big four banks are at 60%.
Additionally, it is already apparent that the supply activities will continue to feature politically ahead of the 7 May General Election, and with preliminary findings due from the CMA in June.
The CMA has the clout to fix the broken banking industry once and for all, and lay the foundations for a competitive market that works for, rather than against, customers".
The CMA could adopt structural remedies, such as forcing banks to carve new banks out of their existing networks, or it could recommend behavioural remedies – forcing them to become more transparent with charges or to send text alerts to customers when they go overdrawn.
The merger was not expected to substantially cut competition, the CMA said.
Stephen Ibbotson of the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales also welcomed a full investigation: "It is right that the CMA is conducting a full-scale investigation into the business lending sector," he said.
