In addition, analysis of the reconstructed collagen networks indicated the presence of very long fibers and the clustering of fibrils, resulting in very high connectivities for collagen networks formed in co-gels.
Numerous clusters of large fibrils with a length of 0.2 3 µm and a diameter of about 10 nm were observed with the PrDQ89 or the PrDQ55 fusion proteins, indicating that the long polyQ tracts mediate the self-assembly of typical amyloid structures.
As can be observed in Fig. 7, the ErA particulate matter which is clearly proteinaceous in nature has aspect ratios significantly different to 1 1, and have long, string-like morphology or clusters of protein fibrils.
The ligand 5-hydroxyindole in comparison showed clusters of α-syn fibrils, albeit shorter than α-syn fibrils in the absence of this ligand (Figure 6C D and Figure 6A B, respectively).
After 24 h from the start of aggregation, the globular oligomers were found to be assembled into clusters (Fig. 6B), while at 48 h bundles of fibrils, almost totally submerged by non fibrillar material, were observed (Fig. 6C and Fig.S6).
Intracellular clustering of negatively stained fibrils was also identified within the cytoplasm of THP-1 cells following 3 (Fig. 2b,f and j) and 6 h (Fig. 2c,g and k) incubation at 37 °C.

Some of the diseases also feature clumps of fibrils called amyloids.
Interestingly, for example, those with hydrogen-bonded networks of fibrils melt on heating, whereas those formed through hydrophobic fibril fibril interactions strengthen when warmed.
In each instance, the researchers said, the body eventually turns the protofibrils into sheets of fibrils called amyloid.
