Structural diversity in this domain allows MerR family proteins to sense not only various metal ions, e.g., Zn2+ by ZntR, Au+ by GolS, Cd2+ by CadR, Pb2+ by PbrR, or Hg2+ by MerR, but also oxidative stress, e.g., by SoxR via an [2Fe-2S]2+ cluster (reviewed in [131].
This has lead to the model that the Hox and ParaHox clusters arose through the duplication of a hypothetical ProtoHox cluster (reviewed in [ 18]).
