In this report we investigate the effect of a deficiency of the circadian protein CLOCK on aging.
To test this possibility, we examined the expression of the circadian clock protein PER in the brain clock neurons of aged flies.
The characters are a walking compendium of modern female angst -- the quest for a relationship, the ticking of the biological clock, the fear of aging out of the marriage market.
Fig. S6 Molecular cycling of PER protein persists but delays in circadian clock neurons of aged flies.
Essays: The Sciences, for "Clock of Ages" by Brian Hayes.
Importantly, although disruption of the circadian clock may affect the rate of aging, only deficiency of BMAL1 results in severe premature aging [ 16], while deficiencies of other circadian clock genes result in very mild aging phenotypes.
The circadian clock is also implicated in control of aging [ 11]: mice deficient for the core clock protein BMAL1, which develop severe premature aging phenotype [ 13], are the most striking example of this.
The fact that several different components of the circadian clock are involved in the regulation of aging supports the idea that an intact circadian clock is important for longevity, and disruption of circadian oscillations may lead to the acceleration of aging, probably through disruption of the synchronization of metabolic processes [ 7].
Circadian clock is implicated in the regulation of aging.
We recently developed a biomarker of aging called epigenetic clock that is based upon DNA methylation (DNAm) levels [ 11].
