Black students are likelier to have less access to advanced courses, have more inexperienced teachers, attend schools where overall climate for learning is deficient, and face tougher disciplinary consequences than their white peers.
These new tasks, which also include after-school programs, administering medication and social work, come on top of the traditional expectations that principals provide a safe climate for learning, maintain the building, supervise professionals and answer the questions and concerns of parents, students and superiors.
At Ofsted we know what a good climate for learning looks like, with encouragement and fearless problem-solving where things can be done better, and increasingly we are able to identify the innovative and good work that exists around the country.
The corresponding teaching activities gave the students a positive climate for learning (mean = 4.6; SD = 0.5) and the feeling of being part of a 'community' (mean = 4.3; SD = 0.7).
Such a design was rooted in the beliefs that (1) a learning community consisted of cognitive and social dimensions (Kreijns, Kirschner, & Vermeulen, 2013) and (2) social presence and interactions can contribute to conducive climate for learning (Crook & Cluley, 2009; Deng & Yuen, 2011).
The first priority is to sustain a group climate for learning by encouraging critical thinking, questioning in case of uncertainties, and checking mutual understanding (Kisiel et al. 2010; Sutkin et al. 2008; Van den Bossche et al. 2006).
But conducted well, they can create a great climate for continuous learning and development, reinforce key skills that help clinch deals and ensure that all goals are being met.
