Public-service announcement: don't click "free public WiFi" when writing remotely.
Users have found that with Google's "first click free" programme they can gain unrestricted access to subscription sites by going through the search engine every time they wanted to read a story.
In an official blog posted late Tuesday, Josh Cohen, Google's senior business product manager, said the company had updated its so-called First Click Free program so publishers could limit users to viewing no more than five articles a day without registering or subscribing.
He gave me a demo of the product, which is in fact click free.
Now Google is allowing publishers to opt into a First Click Free program, which should actually be called the First Five Clicks Are Free.
Yesterday, Google threw complaining publishers a bone with its First Click Free program, which lets news sites limit the number of free clicks from Google News for any individual to five a day.
