Job title was used to create categories for occupational physical activity; sedentary work included managerial and clerical jobs, whereas physically active work included child-care, school lunch cooking, and technical jobs at water, sewer, and waste treatment facility.
Additionally, we gathered activity contents, numbers classified by profession (medical doctor, nurse, pharmacist, other medical staff, clerical employee, and others), the activity time per year, and the frequency of each activity.

This lack of clarity is partly because knowledge work involves more diverse and amorphous tasks than do production or clerical positions, where the relatively clear-cut, predictable activities make jobs easier to automate or streamline.

We included the following outcomes: wage rates; hours worked in the previous 12 mo; total net annual income from wage work, own-account agricultural, and own-business activities; whether an individual currently worked in clerical, administrative, technical, or professional positions; and whether an individual operated his or her own nonagricultural business for <9 mo/y.
