Six classes race each week: four-cylinder front-wheel drive, four-cylinder rear-wheel drive, V6 front-wheel drive, modified, street stock and a junior combined class for drivers ages 13 to 16. Racing starts at noon.
Mr. Long, the association's general manager, said the dirt-track division recently inaugurated a class for drivers as young as 5, and there were drivers in their 70s competing on the big road course.
Assistance systems (and infrastructure designs) that focus on the provision of feedback and law enforcement may be more useful for the class of drivers who commit deliberate traffic violations, while error-prone, absent-minded, and confused drivers may benefit more from systems that facilitate orientation and provide general support in dealing with driving as a multifaceted task.
But increasingly, another factor has come into play for the elite class of drivers in world auto racing: Because the series requires so much travel and so many demands on a driver's time and attention in dealing with the media, sponsors, team personnel and fans, drivers say that their physical workouts are intended as much to keep in top condition mentally as physically.
"No one talks to them, no one engages with them," said Kumar, which runs gender-sensitisation classes for rickshaw drivers.
Lee, who said he had not yet seen the complaint, added that Sun Taxi holds classes for its drivers on providing customer service regardless of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
"The conversations about the changing scenario in cities like Delhi where women are becoming more empowered are just not happening," said Kumar, which runs gender-sensitisation classes for rickshaw drivers.
But Joan Claybrook, a former head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and now president of Public Citizen, an advocacy group, said that resorting to a ranking instead of a rule was particularly unhelpful for the class of driver most likely to roll a car, young people who do not choose cars with safety in mind.
This common behavior is repeated for both classes of drivers.
New Jersey considers adding a two-hour safety class for new teenage drivers — and their parents.
Mr. Merola added that his concerns would have been allayed if the governor had proposed creating a second class of driver's license for the illegal immigrants.
