When the EPTD decreased, energy from waves, propagating into the stratosphere from the troposphere, also decreased, so the stratospheric overturning circulation slowed down.
Sitting down puts your body in neutral – it constricts circulation, slows your metabolism, shuts off muscles and tightens your connective tissues.
However, if the overturning circulation slowed and if the low-latitude stratosphere warmed down to the tropopause, the top of the troposphere could have warmed enough to allow the amount of water vapor entering the stratosphere to have increased.
New evidence published this week in the leading journal Science shows for the first time that the ocean's overturning circulation slowed during every one of those temperature plunges – at times almost stopping.
The results suggest that upper ocean circulation slowed during the 2000s, reducing the upwelling of carbon-rich deep waters and increasing ΔpCO2, and therefore also increasing ocean CO2 uptake (Fig. 1).

"If this whole circulation slows down and there's less energy in these storms, then basically we get more persistent weather situations, which can lead to some extreme heat waves," said Stefan Rahmstorf, also a researcher at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research but not one of the study's authors.
Climate scientists will be quick to point out that even if the Atlantic circulation slows or shuts down, ceasing to transport as much heat and leading to some Northern Hemisphere cooling, the overall global warming trend will still be ongoing and may overpower it.
By sitting for long periods of time, our blood circulation slows, and so too does our brain function.
