At the moment, Mr. Castro is bullish on the slumping Lucent, because of the planned spinoff of its fiber component and integrated circuit businesses.

Agere Systems, the maker of communications chips that was spun off from Lucent Technologies, said yesterday that it would cut 4,000 jobs, or more than a third of its work force, as it left the optoelectronics sector to focus on its integrated circuits business.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the Corning, N.Y.-based firm was one of the largest integrated circuits businesses before completely leaving the sector.
"The short of the matter is that the responsibility for assuring that the constitutionally adequate procedures governing California's parole system are properly applied rests with California courts, and is no part of the Ninth Circuit's business," the opinion said.
