When his parents became estranged, his mother, a feisty journalist, would drag him to many lunches full of "strong middle-class women"; hacks, basically, with a little too much makeup and a little too much to say, and perhaps (you'd imagine) those dry little vertical cigarette lines on the upper lip, wreathed in smoke.
