After he and his friend Frederic Church, the landscape painter, took a long trip to South America -- Field collecting biological specimens, Church painting -- Field became intrigued by the possibility of a trans-Atlantic telegraph cable.
Charcot liked to draw portraits (in particular, sketches of colleagues during boring faculty meetings and students' examinations), caricatures of himself and others, church sculptures, landscapes, soldiers, etc.
The monarchy, Parliament, the churches, the landscape, the economy, education, agriculture, architecture, transport, literature, town life and, not least, the empire changed profoundly, if not fundamentally.
