In Eastern Orthodox churches, Advent is longer, and it usually begins on November 15.
Violet is the traditional color of penitential seasons in the Church, and Advent is thought of in the Christian Church as a time for soul searching and penitence, as well as for generosity, as one prepares for Christmas.
Let's remind ourselves that, on the church calendar, Advent is, in fact, not just a prelude to the celebration of Jesus' birth in a Bethlehem manger.
