Light your charcoal, preferably with a chimney starter rather than chemical fire starters.

As for lighting hardwood charcoal, with a couple of chimney starters it takes only 15 minutes.
When grilling for three or more people, I light several chimney starters or add fresh wood chunks to the hot zone every five minutes, to get plenty of fresh embers.
These can slow smoke or grill, do both very well, and easily, with real wood and real fire but without hassle or time constraints, lighting quickly with no mess or chimney starters, and then cooking accurately with minimal supervision.
But not all chimney starters are the same, and I've discovered that the square tubed version made by PBS host and grilling expert Steven Raichlen is far superior to the basic round version most people use.
Both are cleverly designed so that you can fill any or all of the zones with the solid fuel of your choice in heavy-duty steel trays above the burners and beneath the grates, and then ignite them using the gas, with no chimney starters, lighter fluids, matches or newspaper.
