"Buried Child," "True West" (the latter now in previews for a Broadway opening on March 2) and "Curse of the Starving Class" are a family trilogy, sort of.
Though it received a widely praised New York premiere 25 years ago, with Mr. Shepard directing a starry cast that included Geraldine Page and Harvey Keitel, "Lie" is less well known -- and less frequently revived -- than its author's similarly themed "Buried Child," "True West" and "Fool for Love".
Like those previous volumes, this slender book is a highly uneven hodgepodge of stories, playlets and narrative fragments: bits and pieces of writing that reprise -- often in distilled, italicized form -- the themes and obsessions that have animated this author's work from "Cowboy Mouth" and "The Tooth of Crime" through "Buried Child," "True West" and "A Lie of the Mind".
