'check the dictionary' is a correct and usable expression in written English.
You can use it when you need to find the definition or spelling of a word, or when you want to double-check something you are unsure of. For example: "Be sure to double-check the spelling of your word - why not check the dictionary to be sure?".
I think I simply misread ALKALIS in Chambers Words, and naturally never had reason to check the dictionary entry thereafter.
