Traditional log cabins and timber-framed dwellings required "extensive lengths of straight, high-quality timber," Mr. Tishler wrote in the opening chapter of "Cordwood Building: The State of the Art," a collection of articles edited by Mr. Roy.
"The story is that this building is pushing the boundaries of performance in all categories, not just in one or two," said Jason McLennan, the chief executive of both the certifying institute and the Cascadia Green Building Council, a chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council that administers the better-known LEED rating system.

All these projects were completed in 2010, the last chapter of a building boom that stretched through much of the decade.
