When the duration of the illness-related absence from work was ≤3 days, the intervention-mediated positive changes in concerns over economic status, doctor support, and the sense of being discriminated against were larger compared with patients who were absent from work for ≥11 days (β = -0.31, –0.290, –0.405; p < 0.05; 0: ≤3 days, 1: 4–10 days, 2: ≥11 day).
As hypothesized, changes in concern partially mediated this relationship.
Key findings of this study were that a cross-sectional analysis at multiple points in time can better describe the social ecological developments within a community and that changes in concern can demonstrate broader community recognition of the fundamentals of environmental health research (i.e., from understanding the source to potential exposure pathways and exposure mitigation) [ 42].
