The STG represents an extrastriatal region of visual cortex specialised for processing emotional expressions and other changeable aspects of face stimuli [50] [51] in contrast to invariant properties such as identity, encoded within the fusiform face area (FFA) [52].
Enhancement of activity for negative versus neutral expressions has been observed with different neuroimaging techniques in occipital lobes [59] [62], fusiform gyrus [63] [66], and superior temporal gyrus [67] particularly implicated in processing face changeable features like emotional expressions [16].
One pathway (including posterior superior temporal sulcus, pSTS) is responsible for processing changeable aspects of faces such as gaze and expression, and the other pathway (including the fusiform face area, FFA) is responsible for relatively invariant aspects such as identity.
However, we note that the STS has been proposed to be involved in changeable aspects of faces, such as expression or gaze direction (Haxby et al., 2000), and thus might not have been expected to be strongly active in the current experiment in which static images with mostly neutral expressions were used.
Changeable aspects of faces such as eye gaze, expression, and lip movement are thought to be primarily represented in the posterior part of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) (Allison et al. 2000; Grossman et al. 2000, 2004; Blakemore and Decety 2001; Grossman and Blake 2001 , 2002.
Applying novel decoding analyses to the power spectrogram of electrocorticograms (ECoG) from over 100 contacts in ventral and lateral temporal cortex, we found better representation of both invariant and changeable aspects of faces in ventral than lateral temporal cortex.
