The distribution of L (K) revealed a continuously increasing curve without a clear maximum for true K. To overcome these difficulties in identifying the true K value, an ad hoc quantity (ΔK) was calculated based on the second-order rate of change of likelihood (∆K) using the software Structure Harvest (Evanno et al. 2005; Earl 2012).

The most likely number of ancestral populations was identified as the k value, where the change of likelihood dropped considerably and subsequent values plateaued (Δk criterion).

If a proposal move results only in a change of likelihood on a few branches, then we subtract the initial logarithm of partial tree likelihood from the logarithm of full tree likelihood and add the new log partial tree likelihood.

There was no difference in the change of likelihood of receiving two or more concurrent antihypertensive drugs versus monotherapy between intervention and control patients (p-values for intergroup comparisons > 0.05).

Clustering inference performed with possible clusters (K) from 1 to 10 showed that the most significant change of likelihood occurred when K increased from 2 to 3, and the highest Δk value was observed at k = 2 (Fig.  1A, B, C).

Figure 1 represents estimates in change of likelihood for a worker of mean age and BMI to be in a worse psychosocial category per unit increase in job physical exposure measure for the typical job as compared to the probability in the best psychosocial category.

Shown are the mean posterior probabilities of K as well as the standard deviation, log likelihood of K, second order rate of change of log likelihood and Delta K. Preferred K value (highest Delta K ) is shown in bold.

Following Evanno et al. (2005), we calculated ΔK, the second-order change of the likelihood function divided by the standard deviation of the likelihood, to discuss the optimal value of K. Results were visualized using the program DISTRUCT (Rosenberg 2004).

Ln(k) = mean of the likelihood distribution LnP(D) over 5 runs for each K value from 1 to 7; Ln'(K) = rate of change of the likelihood function with respect to K; |Ln"(K)| = second order rate of change of Ln(K) with respect to K; Delta K) = mean |Ln"(K |)/DevSt(L K)).

This approach is equivalent to taking the second order rate of change of the likelihood function with respect to K (Δk) [42].

d ) The rate of change of the likelihood distribution (mean).
