Unsaturated fatty acid chains of medium length and neutral amino acid head groups are required for optimal uncoupling activity on mammalian cells.
These findings clearly indicate the stabilizing effect of the presence of a hydrophobic side-chain of medium or large volume inside the protein at position 441.
