The Towering Inferno is filmed with only closeups, mid- and long-shots; with the advent of CGI, it becomes possible – at least in theory – for disbelief to remain suspended high above the skyscrapers, an all-seeing eye that contemplates The Day After Tomorrow for its entire nauseating duration.
In fact, other than the CGI, it feels exactly like the 1960s Star Trek, from the sets to the performances; dialogue, music, costumes, the works.
Cash that has been splashed predominantly on more ridiculous CGI than ever, the philosophy being that if it can be rendered in eye-bleeding CGI, it will be.
No longer are they committed to choices made on a rainy location; with CGI it can all be altered at a later date.
It's all very well for comic-book writers to create characters with laser vision and the ability to leap tall buildings at a single bound, but until advances in CGI, it was nigh on impossible to recreate them on the big screen.
Thanks to the magic of CGI it has Tiesto's face.
