Isserlis sees the Cello Suites as "dance movements above all".
Everything came together in Mr. Luna's new "Mga Awit (A Love Cycle for Voice, Cello & Piano)," danced to music full of dramatic incident, composed by Michael Dadap and performed live by Sal Malaki (tenor), Marc Tagle (cello) and Cynthia Guerrero DeLeon (piano).
Do the hugely famous Slavonic Dances, the Cello Concerto or the New World Symphony – works featured in the festival – really need any more exposure?
It now holds regular concerts, from Gypsy tunes to classical cello, as well as dances to rival anything held back in its heyday.
That influence could also be heard in the "Valse Rappelée," the second movement of Dances for Cello and Piano (1983), which Ms. Vinokur performed with the cellist Adrian Daurov.
Most of the music (performed by the flutist Shawn Wyckoff and the pianist Olga Vinokur, among others) comes from the nineteen-eighties (including "Bright Music" and the Dances for Cello and Piano), while the String Quartet No. 2, a true rarity, dates from 1952; all of it is melodically inspired and impeccably refined.
In For Charles Curtis, one of the other works performed tonight, long sine waves and sustained cello notes appear to dance with each other, their waveforms rhythmically interacting through precise microtonal shifts in tuning.
Ms. Fenley contrasted similar sweeps of the arms with quick footwork in "Voices," which she danced to cello music by Kevin Volans that juxtaposed lyric lines with nervous rapid phrases.
But most of "Ballads" had a melancholy beauty, and it was dramatically danced by Muirne Bloomer, Benjamin Dunks, Anne Gilpin, Robert Jackson, Simone Litchfield and Ms. O'Keeffe, who is a dancer as well as a musician and who occasionally treated her cello as a dancing partner.

The five-piece have seemingly perfected the indie-dance genre, combining cello, violin, keys, Fender guitars and ukulele to produce an exciting sound that has seen them scale the local scene.
