To cease driving is a non-issue for those who still drive, it is too early for them to even think of the day when they will no longer be fit to drive.
Eighty-one glaucoma subjects and 58 glaucoma suspect controls between age 60 and 80 reported if they had ceased driving, limited their driving in various ways, or preferred another to drive.
Ford also told the agency it did not intend to issue a news release about the recall, as it did last month when it instructed owners of the 2013 Escape equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine to cease driving the crossover because of a fire hazard, but added that it would "provide comments when requested".
It is anticipated that during follow-up, some participants will cease driving permanently.
For those who cease driving, annual follow-up continues following the same protocol as for all participants, excluding instruments and records relevant only to drivers (e.g., vehicle inspection, driving records) (Fig. 1).
Previous research has demonstrated that older women cease driving when they consider themselves too old for driving, whereas men declare themselves to be safe drivers despite severe illness [25].
Quality of life is typically reduced for older adults when they cease driving and certain vulnerable populations, such as women and financially disadvantaged individuals, often suffer the most from giving up their driving mobility (Oxley and Whelan 2007).
Fonda et al. (2001) note that older adults who reduce or cease driving are at a greater risk for worsening depressive symptoms, even when they have a spouse who is able to drive them instead.
Older adults cease driving for a variety of reasons, which range from financial, vehicle access, and psychosocial reasons to various age-related medical concerns (Anstey et al. 2006; Carr et al. 2006; Dellinger et al. 2001; Edwards et al. 2008; Freeman et al. 2005; Marottoli et al. 1993; Sims et al. 2007).
This is consistent with prior studies showing that older women drivers are more likely to drive less, to avoid driving in certain situations (Betz and Lowenstein [2010]; Charlton et al. [2003]; Charlton et al. [2006]; Donorfio et al. [2008a]; Gwyther and Holland [2012]; Kostyniuk and Molnar [2008]; Lyman et al. [2001]; West et al. [2003]) or to cease driving earlier than men (Carr et al. [2006]).
