In the present work, we apply an adaptation of our previous self-limited In3+ for Cu+ CE protocol as the second step in a sequential topotactic CE reaction, through which template Cd-chalcogenide NCs and HNCs are first cation exchanged to Cu-chalcogenide NCs and HNCs and subsequently subjected to a partial In3+ for Cu+ CE.
A newly made MMV was treated to equilibrate with a permeation solution (50 mM sodium acetate, 0.1 M NaCl, pH 4.5) containing 5 μM fluorogenic substrate of cathepsin E (CE) MOCAc-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ile-Ile-Phe-Phe-Arg-Leu-Lys(DnP -D-Arg-NH2 (CoDnP -D-Arg-NH2tiDnP -D-Arg-NH2Inc., Osaka), anDnP -D-Arg-NH2led with a Codeeaction solution (PeptideInstituteInc.cOsakaning 5 μM substrand and 5 pmol CE additively).
The CE reaction is stopped in clean methanol, and then the samples are dried under N2 flow.
The CE reaction was performed by the immersion of the substrate in a methanolic solution (4 mL) of Cu+ cations (2 mM solution of Tetrakis acetotnitrole) copper (I) hexafluorophosphate in methanol, 75 mg/mL) for 5 min.
This phenomenon could not be explained by means of a formerly proposed chemical electrochemical (CE) reaction mechanism.
On the basis of our calculations, we can present the following model for the masked CE process on single CdSe NWs, as already sketched in Fig. 1: At the initial stage of the CE reaction, Cu+ ions access unmasked regions of the NW and replace Cd2+ ions, mainly by radial diffusion from the surface, since this is the more effective diffusion pathway.

S.D. performed the electrical device fabrication and characterization, S.K. synthesized the nanowires and performed the CE, Z.D. performed the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis, F.P. provided the XPS and UPS analysis, and L.D.T. contributed with insight into CE reactions.
Copper chalcogenide NC have also been investigated extensively in cation exchange (CE) reactions.
Copper-chalcogenide NCs are often used as parent (template) NCs or intermediates in sequential CE reactions, because Cu+ is easily exchanged by other cations.
Recently, we demonstrated that CE reactions can be used to produce NCs of ternary semiconductors, by performing partial Cu+ for In3+ CE in Cu2– x S NCs, which resulted in luminescent wurtzite CuInS2 NCs.
Sequential CE reactions (Cu+ for Cd2+ followed by partial In3+ for Cu+) were also performed on other CdSe/CdS dot core/rod shell NR samples and yielded similar results.
