The results of our study provide new insights into the mechanism behind the enhanced substrate binding and wider substrate spectrum of NDM-1 compared with its homologous enzymes CcrA and IMP-1.
It had type I ccr gene complex carrying ccrA and ccrB genes that were classified into ccrA1 and ccrB1 based on the criteria suggested by IWG-SCC [ 2].
It is likely that in MBLs with a tryptophan residue at the tip of the loop (CcrA, IMP family) the interactions of this residue with the inhibitor lead to a rather greater movement of the loop than in those enzymes where this tryptophan is absent (BcII, VIM family).
