In suggesting that the solution to this problem is an improvement in the way teachers are "trained, hired and assigned," your editorial does not consider that long hours and tough working conditions are a well-documented cause of teachers' leaving the profession, particularly in poor, urban schools.
And the unions -- believing that they are helping the cause of teachers by being weak on sexual predators -- prefer suspensions and fines, and not dismissal, for teachers charged with inappropriate sexual conduct.
