Daschle supported the emergency spending measures that Bush proposed after the September 11th attacks, and, earlier, he did Bush a favor by joining other senators in not taking up the Congressional Black Caucus's resolution demanding a recount of the 2000 Presidential-election results in Florida.
The appointment is subject to approval by the full Democratic caucus and a resolution by the full Senate after it convenes in January.
WASHINGTON -- The Congressional Black Caucus unveiled a resolution on Wednesday that honors the life of Trayvon Martin and calls for the repeal of "Stand Your Ground" gun laws in every state that has one, including Florida, where Martin was killed.
More than 40 House members, led by the Congressional Progressive Caucus, declare in a resolution that any deal on taxes and spending "should not cut Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security benefits".
And Rabbi Shira Stern, director of a Jewish chaplaincy program in New Jersey and a leader of the Women's Rabbinic Network, the caucus that wrote the resolution, said it was a mandate to create liturgies for use in same-sex ceremonies.
In the Senate, Democrats said they had strong support in their caucus for a new resolution that would require the president to begin a gradual withdrawal of troops, aiming for a full removal of combat forces by March 31 , 2008
Mr. Frost, 60, a lawyer from Fort Worth who has been in the House since 1979, cautioned against too abrupt a change, particularly when Mrs. Pelosi and 125 other Democrats -- a majority of the caucus -- opposed the resolution giving President Bush authority to take unilateral action against Iraq.
The remaining members of caucus unanimously pass a resolution asking Smith to withdraw her request for a leadership review; Smith agrees.
"To that end -- and capitalizing on Obama's use of the Lincoln Bible during his own inauguration -- Congressman Randy Forbes of Virginia (head of the Congressional Prayer Caucus) has introduced a resolution urging the display of the Lincoln Bible in the Capitol Visitor Center.
"There is no party position on an issue of this gravity," said Representative Martin Frost, Democrat of Texas and party caucus chairman, who supports the resolution.
