To validate these bioinformatics analyses, all Msl1- and/or Nsl1-bound genes were divided into three categories: Msl1- and Nsl1-bound genes (category 1), genes bound only by Nsl1 (category 2) and genes bound only by Msl1 (category 3).
All this boded well for Paul's theory that folk-psychological terms would gradually disappear — if concepts like "memory" or "belief" had no distinct correlates in the brain, then those categories seemed bound, sooner or later, to fall apart.
This enabled us to split the data into two categories; regions bound by Otx2 and Oct4 at one or more time points (Otx2+/Oct4+) and by Otx2 in the absence of Oct4 binding (Otx2+/Oct4−; Figure S1D).

To estimate the magnitude of the increase in diversity, we fitted a linear model to the data, which showed that genes in the youngest category are typically bound by 4.1 TFs, whereas the oldest genes are bound by 5.4 TFs (table 2).
For eight commodity categories, the lower bound of the range is less than 50%, whereas for six categories the upper bound is over 200%.
For open-ended lowest categories, the lower bound was considered as zero, while the open-ended highest categories were assumed to be of the same amplitude as the preceding categories.
