In all, the first Red List of Cambodian Antiquities at Risk published on the internet by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) details 46 categories of object.
Once expanded to encompass 20,000 potential categories of object, the identification process managed just 15.8% accuracy: a huge improvement on previous efforts, but hardly a new digital dawn.
Uniquely, we demonstrate the ability of our learned image descriptor to generalise beyond the categories of object present in our training data, forming a basis for general cross-category SBIR.

In essence, this argument relates to the entire edifice of language: how it is that we divide the world into specific categories of object or concept that we can all, within a given culture, agree on.
Visual object classification studies utilizing time-sensitive methods, such as EEG, intracranial recordings and MEG have successfully shown that different categories of object and word can be classified very rapidly (Liu et al. 2009; Simanova et al. 2010; Chan, Halgren et al. 2011; Murphy et al. 2011).
