In 2007, a consensus panel redefined research diagnostic categories of HAND, identifying HIV-associated dementia (HAD) as the most severe form of injury (Table 1).
The Frascati criteria, based on a consensus panel convened by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke NINDSS) in 2007, are the basis for distinguishing the categories of HAND: asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI), minor neurocognitive disorder (MND), and HIV-associated dementia (HIV-D) [ 1].
