Scrutiny and comparison of the most inspiring prior research (Sinclair 1981; Thetela 1997; Hunston 2000; Hood 2004) has led us to the formulation of a new, practical distinction between three categories of context: −real + argumentative intention, +real + argumentative intention, and + real – argumentative intention.
