The first successful case of curing human gene-defect disease in the United States was performed in 1990 [ 121].
Later, cART was suspended for unknown reasons, surprisingly resulting in the lack of virus rebound and HIV detectability by multiple testing, leading to the hypothesis that she might represent the second case of "cure" after Tymothy Ray Brown, the "Berlin patient".
The recent setbacks of these early cases of cure illustrate that there is a lot that is still unknown about HIV/AIDS cure research and there is the real possibility that HIV may return in any early phase trial.
The outcome was categorized as favourable in cases of cure and treatment completed, and as unfavourable in cases of failure, death, default, physician's decision to stop early and transfer out.
Previously treated cases had lower proportions of cured and higher proportions of failed, unknown outcomes, and deaths compared to new cases (Table 2).
