To better illustrate the scoring system used, representative images of positive cases with intensity score 1 (weak), score 2 (moderate) and score 3 (strong), for MCT1, MCT2, MCT4 and CD147 staining are shown in Figure 1. Figure 2 summarises MCT and CD147 expressions in normal, adjacent non-neoplastic, PIN lesions and tumour tissues.
LMP1 expression was detected in 160 (75%) cases with a staining intensity score ranged from 0 to 11.7.
In all cases analysed, cases showing the negative expression as non-tumorous gastric mucosa and stroma were regarded as intensity score 0, whereas cases showing the strongest YWHAZ protein expression were regarded as intensity score 3. The remaining cases were divided into intensity score 1 and 2, respectively, according to the level of YWHAZ protein expression.
The mean percentage of stained cells from the two cores was calculated, while in cases with different intensities, the higher intensity score obtained from the two cores was used.
Cases were classified as positive if the intensity score was strong and at least 10% or more of cells showing evidence of overexpression.
Regarding intensity, score 0 was found in no cases (0%), score 1 in 55 cases (41%), score 2 in 33 cases (24%), and score 3 in 47 (35%) cases.
For pancreatic cancer, staining intensities of ADAM17 were scored as intensity 0: 27 cases, intensity 1: 16 cases, intensity 2: 40 cases and intensity 3: 14 cases.
A final score was obtained for each case by multiplying the percentage and the intensity score.
