Premature recognition in a case of secession can amount to intervention in a state's internal affairs, a violation of one of the fundamental principles of international law.
Subnational jurisdictions will decide to secede if the utility enjoyed by the regional median voter by locally providing the local public good (education) outweighs the disutility resulting from a higher cost of providing the national public good (whose financing is not shared any longer with the other jurisdictions in case of secession).20.20
These explorations also track contemporary events such as nationalist clashes which have spilled over into widespread suffering (notably in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda), increased calls for national self-determination to carry considerable weight, such as in state recognition for Palestinians or Tibetans, and also in the case of secession (prominently, Quebec).

What matters as well for our purposes is that whereas the examples given by Sidgwick properly illustrate the logic of his argument, those provided by Kant do not really enlighten us further, for the idea of purpose frustration (or "self-frustration") mobilized in the rebellion and secession cases is certainly not applicable once we shift to an ideal public.
