Characterization of fresh and used catalysts by BET, TEM, XRD and XPS revealed that the deactivation of Pd/AC catalyst is caused by the micropore blockage because of coke formation, whereas in the case of Pd/CNF, deactivation is caused by a combination of coke deposition (in lower extent than in the case of activated carbon), active phase sintering and chlorine poisoning.
The case of catalyst deactivation by site coverage and pore plugging is considered in detail.
In the case of H-ZSM-5, deactivation is thought to be caused by the formation of large poly-aromatic compounds (from the smaller aromatic molecules of the HCP mechanism) on the surface and in the pore openings of the catalyst in a process known as external coking.
