"cartoonist by" is not a grammatically correct phrase in written English.
A better way to phrase it would be "cartoonist (by profession)." This means that the person is a cartoonist in their profession or occupation. Example: John is a cartoonist by profession, but he also enjoys painting and sculpting as hobbies.
