What life as a rational being consists in for Rand is a matter of scholarly debate, but it seems to entail dedication to the cardinal values of reason, purpose (purposiveness), and self-esteem and action in accordance with the corresponding virtues of rationality, productiveness, and pride.
To accept this standard and goal is to accept (i) the three cardinal values of reason, purpose (or purposiveness) and self-esteem as not only "the means to" but also "the realization of one's ultimate value, one's own life" (1961b, p. 27), and (ii) the three "corresponding virtues" of rationality, productiveness, and pride.
