Wildfire and timber harvesting are common disturbances occurring in boreal forests, with each having differing carbon consequences (i.e., biomass removed, recovery rates).
More study is needed to determine the overall carbon consequences of shifts in the processing industry, particularly in light of data showing that existing facilities have increased residue utilization, decreased residue production, and improved overall efficiency [9].
Credible information on forest ecosystem and HWP carbon stocks and fluxes can inform forest managers and the public of the tradeoffs between carbon storage and other forest management objectives, and between short and long-term carbon consequences of alternative forest management strategies [4 6].
