The word caravanserai originates from two Persian words - karawan, meaning caravan, and saria, meaning an inn (in the past they were resting places on the edge of a city where merchants would stop, bathe and rejuvenate before heading into the city to sell their wares).
Next up is Ariane Mnouchkine's supposedly spectacular six-hour "Le Dernier Caravansérail (Odyssées)" -- or "The Last Caravanserai (Odyssey)," meaning an Eastern inn with an area where desert caravans can rest -- inspired by the experiences of refugees around the world.
In "Le Dernier Caravansérail (Odysées)" (a "caravanserai" is an Eastern inn with an inner court where desert caravans rest), Ms. Mnouchkine (pronounced muh-NOOSH-kin) worked mainly with material gathered in 2001 from refugees at the asylum camp of Sangatte near Calais.
When there's no room at the inn, you can opt for one of the hotel's Airstream caravans up on the roof, with all the comfort you'd expect from a glamping experience.
