Morphological traits like plant height, plant diameter, crown diameter, length and diameter of the capsules, number of branches, length and diameter of seeds and yield related parameters like number of capsules per plant, number of capsule carpels, capsule weight per plant, number of seeds per capsule, seed weight per plant, biological yield and seed yield were measured.
Results indicated that "thick stem" mutant in relation to control shows significant (P < 0.01 to 0.001) enhancement of plant height, total number of branches per plant, total capsules per plant, seeds per capsule, seed yield per plant, and fibre yield per plant.
However, we demonstrated that even when we controlled for seed number by estimating average seed size per capsule, seed size still differs between areas, which also explains why our observed differences in germination rate and seed size are opposite to those expected (see above).
It is remarkable that the reproductive organs (flowers, fruit capsule and seeds) are highly Ni-enriched.
Use of PPM in STEP 2 and STEP 3 was crucial to keep the capsule and seeds under sterile conditions (Fig. 8).
