It was built on the 3.3-acre site of the old Hovden Cannery on Monterey's Cannery Row and was dramatically expanded in 1996, then renovated again in 2005.
The satellite town of Carmen is on the left bank of the river, and nearby Bugo is the site of a pineapple cannery.
The event, which will observe its 15-year anniversary next year, draws, according to the event Web site, "skippers and deckhands, cannery workers and deck grunts" from around the region to read and sing and celebrate the life of the commercial fisherman.
Eventually Brooklin became a center of fishing, and because fishing vessels needed maintenance, boat repair; repair led to building, and in 1952 a builder, Arno Day, took over a boat yard occupying the site of an old fish cannery, concentrating on fishing boat maintenance and storage.

Next we headed out of town to the North Pacific Historic Fishing Village (portedward.ca), a national historic site and the oldest intact salmon cannery on North America's west coast.
The Tao tribe alleges that government sources at the time described the site as a "factory" or a "fish cannery", intended to bring "jobs [to the] home of the Tao/Yami, one of the least economically integrated areas in Taiwan".
Also on site, are the original boilers from the Hovden Cannery, which once stood where the museum is now.
The site on East Eighth Avenue and Ferry Street formerly housed an Agripac cannery and is situated along the Willamette River.
