Once you have some understanding of the combat techniques involved, the frays can be engrossing and boast a knack for delivering dramatic twists in dominance.
Watching a politician speak is like watching a sporting event; in the moment, when the outcome is uncertain, it can be engrossing, but once it's over I'd rather watch highlights, or find out the score in the papers the next morning.
And depending on the driver's temperament, that acceleration can be engrossing – column-mounted paddles come standard and act quick, and the transmission diligently holds the selected gear – or perfunctory, as simple as flicking the knurled gear knob down to "S", burying foot and fixing eyes on the horizon.
Plot twists and conflictual situations can be engrossing, but for the novel to really work, the reader must feel for and identify on some level with the protagonist.
