The research reviewed suggests that journalists draw on a range of sources to prepare media reports, although most commonly they cite conventional (versus CAM) sources and personal anecdotes.
Vastag et al. [ 36] also report that conventional health care sources were cited more than twice as often as CAM sources, and for shorter articles (under 1,000 words) journalists cited conventional sources almost exclusively.
Bubela et al. [ 10] also noted a tendency to cite conventional sources over CAM sources in their review of Canadian, US and UK-based media reports describing published herbal remedy clinical trials.
Therefore, this study was conducted amongst patients with orthopaedic oncology tumours to determine: the prevalence, characteristics, predictors and reasons for CAM use, types of CAM therapies and practices used, satisfaction with CAM, source of information and disclosure to doctors.
The Internet was identified as the chief CAM information source (81.3% of all respondents), followed by journals (40.8%), books (37.5%), health databases (28.3%), and videos (2.6%).
Although urban areas are more likely to be serviced by public transport, the physical deficits associated with ageing, especially those related to mobility limitations, sometimes influenced where the women would access either CAM practitioners or sources of CAM medications.
While this population provided sufficient data for validation of the CHBQ, the reported results on use of CAM modalities, informational sources and CAM beliefs/attitudes are specific to these cohorts.
Comparisons of area of residence against information sources for CAM, information sharing about CAM use, attitudes towards CAM, and satisfaction with health care are provided in Table 2.
Also, sources of CAM information, perceived barriers to CAM implementation and the need for CAM education were looked at.
Over three quarters of pharmacists surveyed reported sourcing CAM information at least several times a month.
While data accumulated over the last two decades indicate that activation of CAMs induces an increase in intracellular Ca2+ levels in neurons, the mechanisms of this increase remain incompletely understood and probably involve a number of signaling cascades, which link CAMs to the sources of extra- and intracellular Ca2+ by changing the permeability of the respective channels.
