In what is shaping up as a profound change in American politics, the living room stops and the cafe visits where candidates offer handshakes and make appeals for support are creeping toward extinction.
Food, Internet cafe visits and the occasional date cost him $80 a month; fixed-line Internet service costs $8 a month; and electricity and water bills together are another $8 a month, for a total of $160 a month.
Cafe visits did not count as crisis interventions.
The service offered in the AID-intervention was flexible, with a median of 9 (interquartile range (IQR) 6-12) home consultations including cafe visits, 1 (0-3) attendances to healthcare services, 12 (7-21) phone calls to patients and relatives, and 2.5 (0-5) and 5 (0 to 8) phone calls to healthcare and social services, respectively.
They have a bakery-cafe; visit them and bring home some bread.
"If God gives me a life to go around, visit the country and enjoy myself and go to cafes, visit London during Christmas, and see the lights, visit places, work on Afghan education and be with the Afghan people," he said recently.
Here, he walks to local cafes, visits gourmet shops and takes in the scene.
"If people see something wrong in a cafe they visit, we urge them to contact us".
He arrived here Tuesday night, after a raucous get-out-the-vote rally on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and promptly dropped in on his favorite Des Moines haunt, the Baby Boomers Cafe, to visit privately with friends and supporters.
